The Landrovers using FELIX 3D printing for customized Defender builds and restoration

Any Landy-owner would agree that when your Defender is roaring up the rugged trails outdoors, it’s a piece of your heart that you hear purring under the hood.

This passion for Land Rover Defenders led to the start of The Landrovers (www.the-landrovers.com) in Amsterdam where old Land Rover Defenders are restored and get new life blown into them. Automotive customization is the name of the game. Customers want special features on the car and while standard components can typically be used, lately they have started using 3D printing to produce individual and unique parts. The low volume but high customization nature of the company makes 3D printing an ideal solution for these customized projects.

The vision of The Landrovers for each customized vehicle is brought to life in advanced ways. They are currently developing an electric version of the Defender and it will have a digital instrument cluster and infotainment system in the mid-console of the car. This system is engineered based on 3D printed parts.

Land Rover’s rich history and strong passion amongst drivers has kept the production of parts and components alive since its start in 1978. So although almost all components can be bought, the company wants to move away from using only standard and original parts, and wants to do something different for each customer. That’s where 3D printing comes in. A truly personal touch is given to each car, resulting in a unique product that no-one else has.

In the future, even the car exterior will be built to be more customized – think about grills, air intakes, headlamp finishers etc.
